Why does Drop in Osmotic Pressure Cause Swelling in Nephrotic Syndrome

There are tiny blood vessels in the kidneys that filter waste and excess water from the blood stream. When these filters are damaged, a person will get Nephrotic Syndrome. The most common early symptom of this disorder, in both children and adults, is swelling in the tissues around the eyes or in the ankles or feet due to drop in osmotic pressure. The following gives detailed introduction.

Colloid Osmotic Pressure

It can also be referred to as oncotic pressure, which is a measurement of pressure exerted within the cardiovascular system by proteins found in blood plasma. Maintaining the proper levels osmotic pressure ensures that the body tissues maintain the proper levels of liquid and that too much liquid doesn't escape from the capillaries.

Normally, colloid osmotic pressure tends to cause fluid to be drawn into the capillaries. Variations in this pressure can lead to build up of fluid in the tissues, a condition called edema, or swelling.
Swelling due to Drop of Osmotic Pressure in NS

Individuals with NS suffer from large quantity of Urine Protein. Massive proteins will get released into the urine, leading to reduced amount of plasma colloid osmotic pressure. If this happens, the normal exchange of body fluid is disturbed and cannot keep balance any more. Water in blood vessels will transfer toward tissue fluid, resulting in swelling.

Besides, another cause of edema in NS is also associated with low blood protein concentration.
Water in the blood transfers toward interstitial tissue, leading to low effective blood volume. This in turn gives rise to the production of Anti-diuretic Hormone (ADH). Renal tubules will reabsorb more water and sodium, resulting in more water retention. This condition will aggravate the swelling in NS.

Why Swelling Occur in Patients with Renal Failure

In most cases, swelling is caused by excess fluid accumulating in your body. It can be widespread or localized. The root cause is that your kidneys don’t work well or completely lose their function. Swelling in legs, ankles, face, feet or hands are the most common areas.

There are two major reasons causing swelling--heavy loss of protein in your urine and damaged renal function.

Heavy loss of protein in your urine: loss of protein over 3.0 grams per day.

When Renal Failure occurs, your kidney function becomes abnormal. With the aid of protein, blood volume can be maintained. When Renal Failure happens, the fluid in your blood vessel reduced, under such condition, the kidneys would signal that there is short of blood volume which would result in the fluid get into interstitial spaces. Consequently, swelling appears.

The key point to treat swelling is to reduce the loss of protein. In addition, low salt diet should be recommended for patients with Renal Failure.

Damaged renal function

Kidneys are unable to excrete sodium into your urine and cause swelling. Swelling in this situation can be triggered by taking excessive sodium from your daily diets. Patients with Renal Failure may require dialysis in the serious cases. Because the kidneys is unable to regulate electrolytes balance, that’s why we adopt dialysis. Dialysis is an artificial kidney; it can function as your kidneys when the real fail to work. Patients with Renal Failure whose renal function declines to less than 5%-10% require dialysis.

Patients with Renal Failure should limit the water intake, because excess water will aggravate the severity of your swelling. In addition, the kidney function has already been impaired, excessive water imposes heavy burden to your kidneys, making the condition much more serious whereas.
When Renal Failure occurs, there are so many things need to pay attention. To keep away from various complications, healthy lifestyle should be maintained. Only in this way won’t the condition get worsen.

Foamy urine and swelling in kidney disease

Foamy urine, also called albuminuria, often appears in people with kidney disease. Meanwhile, swelling develops as a result of albuminuria. Usually, they come together as one. Whatever the foamy urine or swelling, they can be used to indicate some kind of kidney disease, if there do have some.

What are the causes of albuminuria and swelling?

Albuminuria results from massive protein leakage in urine.

As for swelling, two reasons account for its occurrence.

One is the massive loss of protein in human body. Massive protein leaks into the urine resulting in hypoproteinemia (low levels of albumin in blood). Hypoproteinemia refers to the decrease of albumin concentration in the blood, so does the blood volume. Consequently, your brain will signal the body to retain salt. Excessive salt retention leads to Swelling.

Another cause is the malfunctioned kidney function. Swelling forms because the impaired kidneys fail to remove sodium from the body. That’s why people with Kidney Failure will develop swelling anyway.

After knowing the causes of swelling, the treatments are easily to be realized.
For the first illness condition, protecting protein from leaking is the key point. But how?

Taking tests and get diagnosis

This is the first principle. Before making any moves, you should always make your illness condition clear, and then the right treatments can be given.

Limit the patients’ salt intake

Eating too much salt is anything but making things worse. Restriction of salt consumption is pretty necessary.

Taking certain medications to treat the edema, those drugs can be ACE inhibitor drugs or angiotension receptors.

As for the second condition, repairing the damaged kidney function is a priority for all. Only the impaired function has been restored and regained, the edema subsides accordingly.

Just for your information, swelling or foamy urine is just the symptoms of some Kidney Disease. They are able to send you signal and urge to go for an early detection as well as timely treatment. Please notice your urine and physical changes so as to detect the disease in the very early stage.
