Does Edema Mean the Disease of Nephritis


When body liquid redundantly accumulates in intercellular space of subcutaneous tissue and soft tissues, the clinical condition will display edema which presents obvious hollow when the part with less subcutaneous tissue is pressed.

Edema is a common symptoms of pathological process, the body liquid of which comes from plasma and has almost the same proportion of sodium and water with plasma.

Generally, excessive body liquid's accumulating in coelom is called hydrops such as hydrothorax, Celiac hydrops and hydrocardia, etc. Generally speaking, edema is usually a sign of disease which often can lead to edema. But not all of edema means nephritis and edema is not the specific characteristic of kidney disease, which can be caused by other reasons such as cardiac edema, hepatic edema, nutritional edema, medical edema and idiopathic edema, etc.

Apart from that, for some people they can have edema of part or all over the body with no abnormality found out. This is because that some edema occurs without disease and it is the result of the body's accommodation to its status, internal and external environment, which is clinically called functional edema.

There are some details for different kinds of edema as follows:

One, edema occurs during traveling. Edema occurs during a long trip or long time of walk, which is caused by the increased filtration pressure of acral capillary when the limbs under the knees stand for a long time and the return of blood in vein suffocates as a result of gravity.

Two, edema caused by high temperature. It is more common to woman in clinic. This kind of edema often occurs in summer or hot environment and can repeat for many years, which often appears on hands,feet with slight hollow and accompanys weakness and anorexia. Besides, edema can automatically disappear after summer or when leaving hot environment.

Three, edema caused by insomnia. People who can not fall asleep for a long time in night will have edema on face, eyelids and hands, etc when they get up next morning. But this kind of edema can automatically disappear after movement.

Four, edema when people get up in the morning. When people are asleep, the movement of eyelids will reduce,the blood will flow slowly and the liquid in blood will enter into the loosen tissue of eyelid, which will lead to edema.

Edema can be caused by many factors of physiology or pathology, people should carefully check whether there is some other abnormality nor not and do some tests to find out the real reason.
